A Generative Theory of Tonal Music. The culmination of that collaboration, the 1983 book A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, was groundbreaking for its effort to develop a grammar for music, and spurred a great amount of work in the field. The award of the latter degree marked the launch of the Romanian translation of Jackendoff's book A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, written in collaboration with the composer Fred Lerdahl. Being related to linguistic approaches in generative syntax and to the hierarchical account of tonality in the generative theory of tonal music, cadence-based harmony contexts and its elaborations are formalized.
